«Tiger Woods es un hombre increíble, tiene un gran estilo de vida»

Entrevista por: Mike Young

Después de la confirmación de que Steel Panther tocarán en el festival veraniego Leyendas del Rock en 2016, hemos charlado con el cantante Michael Starr, para hablar un poco sobre el futuro de la banda, nuevos proyectos y nos contará alguna que otra cosa personal, tanto suya como de la banda. Os dejo con la entrevista, tanto en inglés como en castellano. Un saludo heavy!!!!

Muy buenas, soy Mike Young y hoy voy a ser tu entrevistador. Es todo un placer poder tenerte aquí para todos nuestros lectores de Dioses del metal.

Hi, my name is Mike Young and I am going to be your interviewer. It is an honor to talk to you, for all our readers of ‘Dioses del Metal’. How are you?

Desde hace dos años, no habéis sacado ningún disco al mercado, ¿Estáis preparando algo nuevo?

For two years, you have not released any album. Are you preparing something new?

Sí, estamos trabajando en un montón de material nuevo. Manteneros a la espera para algo especial que saldrá muy pronto.

Yes, we are working on a bunch of new material. Stay tune for something very special coming out very soon.

Sois muy creativos con vuestras canciones y vuestros videoclips, ¿En qué os inspiráis para componer?

You are very creative with your songs and your video clips, what draw your inspiration to compose?

Prácticamente nuestras canciones vienen de las experiencias en la carretera. Todas las canciones están inspiradas en hechos reales que sucedieron en realidad en nuestra vida, en alguna gira, o en casa o en casa de nuestras madres.

Mostly our songs come from experiences on the road. All her songs are inspired by actual events that actually happened in our life while on the road, or at home at my moms house. 

Solo habéis sacado tres discos desde que os llamáis ‘Steel Panther’, de esos tres, ¿Con cuál estás más contento?

You have only released three albums since you call ‘Steel Panther’, which one are you most happy or proud?

Yo diría que el que estoy más orgulloso es el primero. «Feel the Steel» es la primera grabación en libertad y que realmente fue una celebración de todos los años de duro trabajo, tratando de conseguir un contrato discográfico.

I would say the one that I’m most proud of is the first one. Feel the steel is the first record released and it really was a celebration of all the years of hard work trying to get a record deal.

Aquí en España, tenéis muchos seguidores, que abarrotan las salas cada vez que vais a tocar a Madrid o Barcelona, y ahora vais a tocar en el Leyendas del Rock en 2016, ¿Qué esperas de un festival que ya va por su décimo-primera edición? ¿Vais a hacer alguna parada más en España este año o el que viene? 

Here in Spain, you have many fans that crowd the halls whenever going to play at Madrid or Barcelona, and now you are going to play in the festival ‘Legends of Rock’ in 2016, what do you expect from a festival now in its tenth-first edition? Are you going to make a stopover in Spain this year or next? 

Estamos muy contentos de estar en el festival. Sí, tenemos la intención de hacer algunos shows en todo el festival también. Calculamos ya que estamos por ahí deberíamos tocar tanto como podamos.

We are so excited to be on the festival. Yes we plan on doing some shows around the festival as well. We figure since we’re out there we should rock as much as we can. 

La verdad, es que sois muy enérgicos sobre el escenario, ¿Haces deporte para estar en forma para cada show? ¿Cuál es tu deporte favorito? 

The truth is that you are very energetic on stage, do you do sport to stay in shape for every show? What is your favorite sport? 

Me encanta ver deportes en la televisión, me pone muy en forma para viajar.

I love to watch sports on TV it gets me really in shape for touring

¿De dónde sacáis esas coreografías que hacéis sobre el escenario? ¿Las imitáis de otros artistas o os las inventáis?

Where do you get the choreographies you do on stage? Do you imitate to other artists or you invented these choreographies? 

Años y años de experiencia lo pagamos con nuestros movimientos coreografiados. Pasamos un montón de tiempo en cada canción, que viene con nuevos movimientos que hacer en el escenario. Además, nos encanta el rock. Cuando estamos en frente de una gran multitud que, naturalmente, llegar a nuevos movimientos nos excita. 

Years and years of experience pays off with our choreographed moves. We spend a lot of time on each song coming up with new moves to do on stage. Plus we just love to rock. When were in front of the big crowd we naturally come up with new moves it excite us. 

Kiss pasa unas tres horas maquillándose para salir al escenario, y ya sabemos que cuidáis mucho vuestra apariencia sobre el escenario, ¿Cuánto tiempo dedicáis vosotros a poneros a punto para salir a tocar?

Kiss spends about three hours to putting on makeup to go on stage, and we know that you take care of your appearance on stage, how much time do you dedicate to put ready to go out and play? 

Lexi se toma alrededor de dos horas para maquillarse. Yo y el resto de chicos nos lleva unos diez minutos. 

Lexi takes about two hours to get his makeup done. Me and the rest of the guys take about 10 minutes. 

En muchas de vuestras actuaciones, habéis tenido alguna colaboración sobre el escenario, sobre todo cuando tocáis en Las Vegas. Una de mis favoritas, fue cuando cantó con vosotros Corey Taylor (cantante de Slipknot) en el Download Festival de 2012. ¿Cuál es la colaboración más especial que habéis tenido? ¿Con cuál os habéis divertido más?

In many of your shows, you have had some collaborations on stage, especially when you play in Las Vegas. One of my favorite was when you sang with Corey Taylor (Slipknot Singer) at the Download Festival in 2012. What was the most special collaboration that you had? If you could make a wish and choose a singer in order to collaborate with you, who singer would you choose? 

Mi deseo sería cantar una canción con Axl Rose. Luego tener en secreto a Slash a un lado del escenario y llamarlo, para que pudieran tocar juntos por primera vez en años. 

My wish would be to sing a song with Axl Rose. Then secretly have Slash on the side of the stage. Then call Slash out and have them play together for the first time In Years.  

De todas las actuaciones que habéis hecho, ¿Con cuál habéis disfrutado más?

All the shows you have played, which one did you enjoy more?

Me gusta mucho actuar en festivales. Tengo la oportunidad de hablar con viejos amigos que no he visto en años.

I really enjoyed performing at festivals. I get to talk to old friends I haven’t seen in years. 

Hablemos un poco de vuestros inicios. La banda ha pasado por diversos cambios de nombre, hasta quedarse con el definitivo y actual. ¿Porque el nombre de ‘Steel Panther’?

Let’s talk about your beginnings. The band has gone through various name changes, until the final and nowadays name. Why did you choose the name «Steel Panther»? 

El acero es el metal más fuerte en el heavy metal. Y una pantera es un gato muy ‘cool’. Y cuando pones esas dos palabras juntas, es una declaración muy fuerte, «Steel Panther». 

Steel is the strongest metal in heavy-metal. And a panther is a really cool cat.  And when you put those two words together it’s a very strong statement, «Steel Panther».

Una de vuestras influencias más conocidas es Van Halen, ya que algunos miembros vienen de bandas tributo a ellos, pero… ¿Cuales son vuestras influencias?

One of your most famous influences are Van Halen, because some members come from tribute bands to them, but… What are your main influences?

Bandas como Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Scorpions, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden y Mötley Crüe.

Bands like Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, scorpions, Judas Priest, iron maiden and Motley Crue.

Los cuatro estuvisteis en la misma universidad, donde os conocisteis y más tarde os reencontrasteis para formar Steel Panther, ¿Que estudiabas? ¿Eras un buen o mal estudiantes? 

The four of you studied at the same university, where did you meet and then rediscover to form Steel Panther, What did you study? Were you good or bad students? 

Nunca terminé yendo al colegio y lo dejé. El día que salí de allí, conocí a Satchel. Eso fue en 1983.

I never ended up going to school I dropped out. The day I dropped out is the day I met satchel. That was back in 1983. 

En los 80, vivisteis el Glam Metal desde dentro, pero hasta ahora no habéis tenido la fama y el reconocimiento con este género, ¿Cuál es la base de vuestro éxito? 

In the 80s, you lived the Glam Metal from within, but so far you have not had the fame and recognition with this genre, What is the basis of your success?

El éxito de Steel Panther viene de no tomárnoslo tan en serio. Nos divertimos y nos trae la fiesta a cualquier ciudad en la que estamos.

Steel Panther’s success comes from not taking ourselves so seriously. We have fun and we bring the party to whatever town we’re in. 

Los miembros de Steel Panther los interpretan unos personajes, ¿Cuando bajáis del escenario, seguís interpretando ese papel o sois vosotros mismos? 

Steel Panther members are interpreted characters, When you go down the stage, do you continue playing this paper? 

Bummer on stage for pretty much the same guys without spandex on. We party we fuck chicks and we live on the edge. 

Las letras de vuestras canciones hablan básicamente de sexo, drogas, rock n’ roll, más sexo… ¿En qué momento decidiste hacer este tipo de letras? ¿Porqué casi todas vuestras canciones tienen nombre de película porno? 

The lyrics of your songs are basically speaks about sex, drugs, rock n’ roll, more sex… In what moment you decide to write this kind of lyrics? Why almost all of your songs have names of porn movies? 

Decidimos escribir sobre nuestras propias experiencias personales. Y nuestras propias experiencias personales son todas acerca de las drogas, el sexo y el rock ‘n’ roll.

We decided to write about her own personal experiences. And our own personal experiences are all about sex drugs and rock ‘n’ roll 

Uno de mis videoclips favoritos es el de «Party Like Tomorrow Is The End Of The World»,  en el se puede ver una gran fiesta, antes de que se acabe el mundo al día siguiente, donde aparece Steve-O de Jackass. La casa donde transcurre todo, ¿Era tu casa o era un plató? 

One of my favorite video clips is «Party Like Tomorrow is The End Of The World», it can be seen on a big party before the end of the world tomorrow, where Steve-O from Jackass appears. The house where he spent everything, was your home or a Set? 

En realidad, fue la casa de mi madre. Ella la solía usar en los 80, pero perdió la casa en un divorcio. El tipo que la posee dirige una compañía de películas porno y él todavía utiliza a mi madre y algunas de sus películas. Así que nos dejaron usar la vieja casa de mi madre de forma gratuita. 

It was actually my mom’s house. She used to own it back in the 80s but she lost the house in a divorce. The guy that owns it runs a porn company and he still uses my mom and some of his films. So he let us use my mom’s old house for free. 

La navidad pasada, sacasteis el tema «The Stocking Song» y el anterior «Sexy Santa», ¿Tenéis algo preparado para estas navidades?

Last Christmas, released the theme «The Stocking Song» and former «Sexy Santa». Do you have something ready for this Christmas?

Cada año escribimos una canción de navidad, así que estad atentos.

Every year we write a Christmas song so stay tuned. 

¿De dónde surgió la idea de dedicarle una canción a Tiger Woods?

Where did arise the idea to dedicate a song to Tiger Woods? 

Tiger Woods es un hombre increíble, no solo es un gran golfista, sino que también tiene un gran estilo de vida. Es muy parecido a «Steel Panther», excepto que él es un tigre.

Tiger Woods is amazing man not only is a great golfer but he also has a great lifestyle. He’s a lot like Steel panther except he is a tiger. 

Con la de kilómetros que habéis recorrido hasta el momento, viajando de un lado a otro del mundo, seguro que os han pasado mil cosas bizarras, ¿Puedes contarnos alguna anécdota de alguno de vuestros viajes?

With the kilometers you’ve travelled so far, travelling around the world, I am sure you have spent a thousand bizarre things, can you tell us an anecdote from one of your trips?

Estábamos en Japón y yo pagué a una puta asiática, pero cuando fuimos a subir al avión para irnos, me di cuenta de que no me la podía llevar a casa.

We are in Japan I bought an Asian hooker. But when we board the plane I realize I couldn’t take her home. 

¿Crees que volverá la época dorada del Heavy Metal? 

Do you think that is coming back the golden age of Heavy Metal? 

El heavy metal está de vuelta y Steel Panther se asegura de hacerlo.

Para ir acabando, ¿Podrías dedicar unas palabras a vuestros fans en España?

For finishing, Could you say a few words to your fans in Spain?

Nuestros amigos en España molan mucho, y no podemos esperar a volver dentro de ese coño.

Are Friends in Spain totally rock, And we can’t wait to get back inside some of that pussy.
