Traemos por aquí al batería de los Gamma Ray, Michael Ehre, gracias por dedicarnos tu tiempo y contestarnos a esta entrevista, un placer.
En breve comenzáis una gran gira rememorando los 25 años de historia de Gamma Ray. ¿Cómo lleváis los preparativos ?. Shortly begin a major tour commemorating the 25 year history of Gamma Ray. ¿How have you been preparing?.
Nosotros como banda llevamos 4 días de ensayo con canciones que son seleccionadas a través de una lista. Empiezo a preparar mucho antes mi trabajo por qué ser baterista es muy agotador. Tengo una rutina de práctica diaria de salir a correr y también hago mucho deporte para poder ser apto para el escenario.
We as a band do 4 days of rehearsal to run through the setlist. I start to prepare much earlier as my job as a drummer is very exhausting. I have a daily practice routine that I run through and I also do a lot of sports do be fit for the stage.
¿Qué podemos esperar en esta gira?. ¿Habrá muchas sorpresas?. ¿What can we expect on this tour?. ¿Will there be surprises?
Sí, en primer lugar que tocaremos un especial de «Lo mejor de …» que fue elegido por nuestros fans. Les pedimos que escogieran sus dos canciones favoritas de cada Gamma Ray-álbum y desde donde vivimos organizamos nuestro “live –set”. También decidimos continuar como un quinteto. En el pasado Kai siempre tenía problemas con su voz y a veces tenía que traer a cantantes sustitutos. De lo contrario, teníamos que cancelar conciertos y esa era la última opción, ya no queremos decepcionar a nuestros fans. Nuestro amigo Frank Beck, quien nos ayudó en nuestra última gira, estará compartiendo las voces con Kai a partir de ahora. Esto será genial por diferentes razones: en primer lugar, que no tienes que cancelar shows si la voz de Kai tiene problemas, lo que añade más variedad a nuestro sonido y todo esto hace que el show de la banda sea mucho mejor. Hemos hecho los primeros conciertos de nuestra «Best of the Best» -Tour y hasta ahora ha sido fantástico!.
Yes, first of all we play a special „Best Of“-set, which was chosen by our fans. We asked them to pick their two favourite songs from each Gamma Ray-album and from this pool we arranged our liveset. We also decided to continue as a five-piece-band. In the past Kai always had trouble with his voice and we sometimes had to bring in substitute singers. Otherwise we had to cancel shows and that´s the very last choice as we don´t want to disappoint our fans. Our friend Frank Beck, who helped us out on our last tour, will be sharing the vocals with Kai from now on. This is cool for different reasons: first of all we don´t have to cancel shows if Kai´s voice is in trouble, than it adds more variety to our sound and all this makes the band sound much better. We´ve played the first shows of our „Best Of The Best“-Tour and so far it has been fantastic!.
Gamma Ray es una banda que toca mucho por España. ¿Que os parece el público español?. Gamma Ray is a band that plays much to Spain, ¿what do you think the Spanish audience?.
Para mí, personalmente España siempre fue un público perfecto para tocar. Los aficionados son muy entusiastas y leales y siempre nos dan la sensación de que somos muy bienvenidos!. Ya en los tiempos en que yo estaba en Metalium experimenté exactamente lo mismo!.
For me personally Spain was always a perfect plays to play. The fans are very enthusiastic and loyal and they always give us the feeling that we´re very welcome! Even back in the times when I was in Metalium I experienced exactly the same!.
Este verano os estuvimos viendo en el Leyendas del Rock, el mejor festival español, ¿qué tal fue la experiencia?. This summer we are seeing in the Leyendas del Rock, the best Spanish festival, what was the experience?.
¡Fue una explosión!. Hacía mucho calor. Como ya sabéis soy alemán y no estoy tan acostumbrado a estas temperaturas tan altas y siempre que vengo estoy un poco preocupado por si podré soportar el clima. Pero tan pronto como estoy en el escenario todo se pasa porque los fans nos dan la mejor sensación que te puedes imaginar.
It was a blast! It was very hot. You know I´m a german and I´m not so used to this hot temperatures and I´m always a little bit worried if I can stand the weather. But as soon as I´m on stage everything is fine because the fans give us the best feeling you can imagine.
Estáis muy acostumbrados a tocar en grandes festivales en verano. ¿Si tuvieras que elegir uno, ese cual sería?. May madness so used to playing big summer festivals. ¿If you had to choose one, this would it be?.
Es difícil de decir… No sé… siempre y cuando a la gente le guste lo que hacemos, estoy muy contento con los festivales de todo el mundo. No importa si es un grande como el Wacken o uno más pequeño, siempre y cuando tengas la sensación de que estás a gusto y todo el mundo se divierte con nuestra música!.
Hard to say…I don´t know…as long as the people like what we do I´m fine with every festival in the whole world. It doesn´t matter if it´s a big one like Wacken or a smaller one as long as the feeling is right and everybody has fun and celebrates the music!.
Tienes una gran trayectoria detrás antes de tocar con Gamma Ray, con grandes músicos como Uli Jon Roth , Gus G. ( Firewind ). ¿Qué tal la experiencia ?.
Have a great career behind before touching Gamma Ray, with great musicians like Uli Jon Roth, Gus G. (Firewind). ¿What was the experience?.
Oh!!, , he tenido muchas grandes experiencias de hecho. Tuve el privilegio de trabajar con muchísimos músicos fantásticos de todo el mundo. Compartí el escenario con iconos como Robbie Krieger de «The Doors» y muchos otros … Es como un sueño hecho realidad. Antes de unirme a Gamma Ray toqué en muchas bandas y proyectos al mismo tiempo, como «Uli Jon Roth», «Matt Gonzo Roehr» (un guitarrista alemán), «Firewind», «Vinnie Moore» o «Kee Marcello. Eso ha cambiado con Gamma Ray, me ocupa mucho de mi tiempo. Esto está muy bien, pero a veces echo de menos la variedad de trabajar con diferentes personas.
Oh, there are many great experiences I made. I had the privilege to work with many, many fantastic musicians from all around the world. I shared the stage with icons like Robbie Krieger from „The Doors“ and many others…it´s like a dream come true. Before I joined Gamma Ray I played in many bands and projects at the same time, like „Uli Jon Roth“, „Matt Gonzo Roehr“ (a german guitar player), „Firewind“, „Vinnie Moore“ or „Kee Marcello. That has changed as Gamma Ray takes a lot of my time. This is absolutely okay but sometimes I miss the variety of working with different people.
Hubo una banda en que estuviste muchos años Metalium , una banda que me encantaba ¿ Que paso para que se disolviera?. There was a band that you were many years Metalium, a band I loved. ¿What happened to be dissolved?.
Es muy simple: el tiempo había terminado… todo el mundo que estaba en la banda participó en otros proyectos y decidimos dividir. Estoy muy orgulloso del tiempo con Metalium, porque hicimos un montón de álbumes y giras y éramos fieles a nosotros mismos y nuestra música. Aprendí mucho en ese entonces.
It´s very simple: the time was over…everybody in the band was involved in other things so we decided to split. I´m very proud of the time with Metalium, because we did a lot of albums and tours and we were true to ourselves and our music. I learned a lot back then.
He podido leer que empezaste con esto hace ya mucho tiempo en bandas como Starchild. ¿Qué recuerdos tienes de esa época?. I have read that you started with this a long time in bands like Starchild. ¿What memories do you have of that time?.
Estoy todavía tocando con Starchild. Recientemente hemos producido nuestro segundo álbum. Espero que vea la luz en 2016. Además de que todavía tengo mi banda «propia», Love. Might.Kill, con quien estamos trabajando en nuestro tercer álbum que verá la luz en el primer semestre de 2016.
I´m still playing with Starchild. We recently produced our second album. I hope it will come out in 2016. Besides that I still have my “own“ band Love. Might.Kill, with whom we´re working on our third album that will be released in the first half of 2016.
También he podido leer que tocas muchos instrumentos aparte de la batería y compones. ¿Cómo son el resto de la banda a la hora de componer?.¿Te dan libertad creativa para componer?. Also I have read that play many instruments besides drums and compose How are the rest of the band when composing? Do you give creative freedom to compose?.
El último Gamma Ray-álbum, Empire Of The Undead, trabajamos como banda en las canciones. Alguien tenía una idea y la banda continuó trabajando en esa idea. Hoy en día esta forma no es muy habitual, en la mayoría de las bandas que conozco no trabajan juntos en una sala de ensayo. Ellos envían unos a otros archivos MP3 y eso es todo… los tiempos han cambiado … no voy a juzgar … Es solo la forma en que es.
On the last Gamma Ray-album „Empire Of The Undead“ we worked as a band on the songs. Somebody had an idea and the band continued working on that idea. Nowadays this way is not very usual as most bands that I know don´t work together in a rehearsal room. They send each other MP3-files and that´s it…times have changed…I won´t judge…it´s just the way that it is…
¿Hay ganas de empezar la gira?. Después de la gira, ¿empezareis con un nuevo álbum de Gamma Ray?. Is there a desire to start the tour?. After the tour do you will begin with a new album Gamma Ray?.
Ya comenzó la gira y hasta el momento ha sido fantástica. Haremos shows especiales con este «nuevo» line-up y esperemos que la gente disfrute de él. Seguramente vamos a empezar a trabajar en un nuevo disco de Gamma Ray después de que la gira haya terminado, pero no disponemos de detalles aún…
We already started the tour and so far it has been fantastic. We play a special set with this „new“ line-up and the people like it. We will surely begin to work on a new Gamma Ray-album after the tour is finished, but I don´t have any details yet…
