Ya os presentamos a Texas Local News con la reseña de su nuevo disco, “Momentum”. Hoy nos entrevistamos con la banda, para que nos cuenten curiosidades, sensaciones sobre el último disco y nos conoceremos un poco mejor. A continuación os dejo con la entrevista. Un saludo heavy!!!

Muy buenas, soy Mike Young de Dioses del Metal y hoy tengo el placer de entrevistar a una banda, que personalmente me gusta mucho, Texas Local News, ¿Qué tal chicos?

Hi, my name is Mike Young and today we have the pleasure to interview a band, which I personally like very much, Texas Local News, How are you guys?

Hey Mike, thanks, actually we’re doing pretty fine at the moment.

Hey Mike, gracias, de hecho lo estamos haciendo bastante bien en este momento.

Primero de todo, quiero saber una cosa… ¿De dónde viene el nombre ‘Texas Local News’? Porque me parece un nombre muy curioso para una banda.

First of all, I want to know one thing… where does the name ‘Texas Local News’? Because it seems to me a very curious name for a band.

Well, that must be the most asked question ever. (laughs) Actually, we were sitting on a couch in our rehearsal room looking for some funny videos in google. Long story short: we couldn’t find any cool video, but the key words from our search stuck in our head. Plane and simple: Texas Local News. We wanted a name, which is easy to remember and also easy to pronounce.

Bueno, esta debe ser la pregunta que más veces nos hacen (risas). En realidad, estábamos sentados en un sofá en la sala de ensayo buscando algunos videos graciosos en Google. Una larga historia corta: No pudimos encontrar ningún vídeo chulo, pero las palabras de búsqueda las teníamos pegadas en nuestra cabeza. Simple y plano: Texas Local News. Queríamos un nombre, que fuese fácil de recordar y también de pronunciar.

Antes de empezar a hablar sobre el nuevo disco, querría haceros algunas preguntas sobre vuestro primer ep, que salió en 2012. El titulo del ep es: “We are pandora”, ¿Qué o quién es Pandora?

Before we begin to talk about the new album, I would like to ask you questions about your first ep, which came out in 2012. The title of the ep is: «We are Pandora,» what or who is Pandora?

Do you know the greek myth of Pandoras box? In our context, Pandora is a metaphor for all the contrasts we combine in our music. Male and female, clean vocals and shouts, breakdowns and sing-a-longs and so on.

¿Conoces el mito griego de la caja de Pandora? En este contexto, Pandora es una metáfora de todos los contrastes que combinan nuestra música. Hombre y mujer, voces limpias y gritos, breakdowns y cantar todos a la vez y así.

Dentro del ep encontramos cuatro temas muy interesantes, pero hay uno en especial que me encanta y me lo habré escuchado más de 1000 veces que es: “My Disgrace”, ¿En qué os inspirasteis?

Within the ep we found four interesting songs, but there is one in particular that I love it and I heard it more than 1000 times it is: «My Disgrace», what inspired you?

The story behind My Disgrace is easy to tell: Uwe, our guitar player, came into the rehearsal room with a new lick, all of us really liked it – right from the beginning. Within 2 hours we pretty much wrote the whole song and today it’s one of our favorite live songs. Sometimes you just feel the energy floating through you, everything comes together on its own and yeah, that was exactly what happened during the writing process of My Disgrace.

La historia detrás de My Disgrace es fácil de contar. Uwe, nuestro guitarrista, vino a nuestra sala de ensayo con un nuevo lick, que nos gustó desde el principio. A las 2 horas, prácticamente escribimos toda la canción y a día de hoy es una de nuestras canciones favoritas en directo. A veces sientes energía flotando a través de ti, todo confluye por su propia cuenta y sí, eso es exactamente lo que pasó durante el proceso de escribir My Disgrace.

¿Por qué habéis esperado 4 años para sacar vuestro primer cd?

Why have you waited 4 years to release your first CD?

Actually, we haven’t been waiting all the time. We’ve just been very busy organizing. Everyone in the band is studying and/or working five days a week, besides that we’re on tour 30-40 dates a year. Producing a full-length, while working or studying, without any external help just took it’s time and we didn’t want to rush through the process to get the best result possible.

En realidad, no estamos escribiendo todo el tiempo. Hemos estado muy ocupados organizando. Todos en la banda están estudiando o trabajando cinco días a la semana, además, estamos de gira 30-40 días al año. La producción fue de larga duración, mientras estudiamos o trabajamos, sin ninguna ayuda externa, toma su tiempo y no queríamos correr durante el proceso para tener el mejor resultado posible.

Bueno, pasemos a hablar del nuevo disco: “Momentum”, que lo primero que me gustaría preguntaros es, si… ¿La chica de la portada es Carla? Y… ¿A quién se le ocurrió esta portada y porqué?

Well, move on to talk about the new album: «Momentum», which is the first thing that I would like to ask you, if… the cover girl is Carla? And… to who came up with the cover and why?

Haha, lots of people have been asking whether it’s her or not. To clear up that mystery: It’s not Carla, rather it’s a non existent person. For the coverart, we hit up with Chris Moore (ex-member of “I See Stars” and “We Came As Romans”) in Detroit/USA, since we liked his previous work he did for bands like WCAR or Fallout Boy. We told him what’s the album’s message and some details we’d like to see, from that point we gave him a free hand on designing the artwork.

Haha, mucha gente nos pregunta si es ella o no. Para aclarar este misterio: No es Carla, más bien es una persona inexistente. Para la portada, nos topamos con Chris Moore (ex miembro de “I See Stars” y “We Came As Romans”) en Detroit/USA, ya que nos gustó sus anteriores trabajos que hizo para bandas como WCAR o Fallout Boy. Hablamos con el del mensaje del álbum y los detalles que nos gustaría ver, desde este punto le dimos libertad para diseñar la portada.

Y empezando a hablar de las canciones de este disco, comenzáis muy fuerte con “Clear Lines”, porque habiendo escuchado primero el ep y después este disco, creo que el disco es mucho más potente, ¿Por qué este cambio?

And starting to talk about the songs on this album, you begin very strong with «Clear Lines», because having first heard the ep and then this disc, I think that the disc is much more powerful, why this change?

Starting right off with “Clear Lines” seemed to be the right decision for us, since it’s one of the songs which describes us best within a short time. Every listener should directly know what it’s all about in Texas Local News. While there indeed are some uptempo songs  on the cd, we also got some slower ones. Every band changes a bit from time to time. I wouldn’t  go that far to say that we’ve made a complete musical turnaround. We still got our trademarks like the polyphonic vocals and melodic choruses contrary to heavy instruments – What definitely has changed is the contrast between hard and soft. It is much more of both extremes.

Comenzar con “Clear Lines” nos parecía una buena decisión, ya que es una de las canciones que mejor nos describe en poco tiempo. Cada oyente debe saber directamente que es de Texas Local News. Mientras que de hecho hay otras canciones uptempo en el cd, también tenemos otras más lentas. Cada banda cambia un poco de vez en cuando. Yo no iría tan lejos como para decir que hemos hecho un cambio de tendencia musical completa. Todavía tenemos nuestras marcas registradas como las voces polifónicas y los coros melódicos contrarios a los instrumentos pesados. Lo que sin duda ha cambiado es el contraste ente duro y suave. Es mucho más de los dos extremos.

Pero uno de los temas que más me han gustado es: “Whisper the Words” una canción muy heavy, que creo que se desmarca un poco del estilo que va siguiendo el disco, igual que “Silence”, ¿Cuáles son vuestras influencias a la hora de componer?

But one of the songs that I’ve liked is: «Whisper the Words» a very heavy song, I think that it stands out a bit of the style that will follow the disc, same as «Silence», what are your influences when composing?

Everyone of us got a different range and variety of musical influences, all of them are combined when we are writing new songs and ideas. Our two lead singers feel home mostly in the pop—punk genre, while the rest of the band has a more metalish background.

Cada uno de nosotros tiene un rango diferente y variedad de influencias musicales, todos ellos se combinan cuando estamos escribiendo nuevas canciones e ideas. Nuestros dos cantantes principales se sienten como en casa en el género pop-punk, mientras que el resto de la banda tiene un fondo más metalero.

Creo que uno de los puntos fuertes de la banda es el aspecto vocal, porque sois tres cantantes, ¿Cómo lo hacéis para que todo encaje tan bien? Me parece realmente difícil mezclar los dos estilos de voces que hacéis, el limpio y el gutural.

I think one of the strengths of the band is the vocal aspect, because you are three singers, how do it so everything fits as well? I find it really difficult to combine the two styles of voices you do, the clean and the guttural.

Good point there. During the writing process it was quite a challenging task to keep the three different main vocals in balance and to make sure none of the three was neglected in some songs. On the other hand, we got way more options than other bands to set up the vocals, when approaching new ideas. Since Jan (whose shouts you can listen to on the album) has left the band in April we kept going with Carla and Timo as lead singers. Timo has taken over the shouts, additionally to singing the male clean vocals, which makes the whole songwriting process way more flexible in my opinion.

Buen punto ahí. Durante el proceso de escritura, fue una tarea muy difícil mantener los tres principales vocalistas en equilibrio y para asegurarse de que ninguno de los tres fuese descuidado en algunas canciones. Por otro lado, teníamos más opciones que otras bandas para la creación de la voz, al acercarse a nuevas ideas. Desde que Jan (cuyos gritos se pueden escuchar en el álbum) ha dejado la banda en Abril, mantenemos a Carla y Timo como cantantes principales. Timo se ha hecho cargo de los gritos, además de cantar las voces limpias masculinas, que hace que todo el proceso de composición sea más flexible en mi opinión.

Molan mucho vuestros videoclips, sobre todo el de Disclosure, ¿Cómo se os ocurrió grabar ese videoclip?

I think your video clips are cool, especially that of Disclosure, who came up with the idea of making a video clip like this?

When Timo wrote the chorus for Disclosure, he already had a specific idea of how the chorus should sound like in the end. He wanted to write a chorus, to which everyone in the crowd is able to sing a long after hearing it a single time. To support that original idea of Timo we came up with the final concept of the music video. Lots of people singing together a disclosing message.

Cuando Timo escribió el coro de Disclosure, el ya tenía una idea específica de cómo debía de sonar el coro al final. Quería escribir un coro, al que la multitud fuese capaz de cantarlo mucho después de oírlo una sola vez. Para apoyar la idea original de Timo, se nos ocurrió el concepto final del videoclip. Un montón de gente cantando juntos un mensaje de revelación.

Ya habéis empezado la gira presentando vuestro nuevo disco, ¿Cómo está reaccionando el público? Y… ¿Pasaréis por España alguna vez?

You have already begun the tour introducing your new album, how can is reacting the audience? And… when you will come to Spain?

Haha, touring Spain someday would be awesome. We’ve been to Belgium so far and will head over to Austria in July.  The audiences’ reactions have been really great. The people like the new line-up, us as a five-piece, as well as the new songs. Especially Disclosure and Clear Lines are live a hugh party, as everyone is able to sing a long after a few seconds. For now, we’ll try to spread the word of the album wherever we can and well…maybe there will be a Spain-tour in the future 🙂

Haha, girar por España algún día sería increíble. Hasta el momento hemos estado en Bélgica y en Julio nos dirigimos a Austria. La reacción del público ha sido realmente buena. A la gente le ha gustado la nueva alineación, así como las nuevas canciones. Especialmente Disclosure y Clear Lines son una fiesta en directo, con todo el mundo cantando a la vez mucho después de unos segundos. Por ahora, vamos a tratar de difundir la palabra del álbum lo que podamos y bien… Tal vez haya un tour por España en el futuro 🙂

¿Tenéis alguna manía o ritual antes de saltar al escenario? ¿Hay nervios?

Do you have any ritual before you leap to the stage? Are there nerves?

Every single one of us got his or her own personal rituals, like warming up the voice or hands and feet, stretching, just relaxing or simply focussing on the upcoming show. However, right before getting on stage, we usually circle and shout out a short slogan, which doesn’t make sense at all, but keeps us focused.

After over 150 shows you’ve got quite a routine, where the excitement outweighs the nervousness. But sure, from time to time there are important or really large shows, you’ve just got great respect for. Even then, all of that is faded away after the first song is done.

Cada uno tiene sus propios rituales personales, como calentar la voz o las manos o los pies, estiramientos, simplemente relajarse o solo centrarse en el siguiente show. Sin embargo, justo antes de saltar al escenario, hacemos un círculo y gritamos un pequeño lema, lo cual no tiene sentido en absoluto, pero nos mantiene enfocados.

Después de más de 150 conciertos ya tienes una rutina, donde la emoción es mayor que el nerviosismo. Pero claro, de vez en cuando hay conciertos importantes o muy grandes, que tienen un gran respeto. Incluso entonces, todo eso se desvanece después de la primera canción.

El metalcore es un subgénero del metal que en los últimos años está teniendo mucha popularidad y repercusión, ¿Cómo veis el futuro del metal ahora que van saliendo tantos estilos de música?

Metalcore is a subgenre of metal which, in recent years, is having much popularity and impact, how you see the future of metal now that they come out as many styles of music?

We think that metal is facing a pretty bright future. Bands like Bring Me The Horizon open the gates for a vast majority of new people. We know there are lots of people, who don’t like that development, but hey to be honest: The more people listen to metal, the more of your favorite bands from the other side of the planet can come to your city and play an awesome show for you.

Nosotros pensamos que el metal se enfrenta a un futuro muy brillante. Bandas como Bring Me The Horizon abren las puertas a una gran mayoría de gente nueva. Sabemos que hay mucha gente, a la que no les gusta este desarrollo, pero hay que ser honestos: La mayor parte de la gente que escucha metal, la mayor parte de sus grupos favoritos son de la otra parte del mundo que pueden venir a tu ciudad y hacer un concierto increíble para ti.

Siendo una banda alemana como sois, ¿Por qué os habéis decantado por cantar en inglés y no en alemán como Rammstein?

Being a German band as you are, are you why have opted for singing in English and not in German like Rammstein?

Well, Rammstein for themselves obviously like to appear German…or at least to act how others would think of Germans to be when making music. Which totally works out for them. For us, English is just the more compatible language to express ourselves. We just find it more comfortable and well-sounding. If you wonder how Metalcore with German lyrics sounds like, you definitely should check out Callejon! These guys are awesome!

Bueno, Rammstein obviamente por si mismos parecen alemanes… o por lo menos actuar como otros pensarían que los alemanes hacen música. Que trabaja totalmente fuera de ellos. Para nosotros, el inglés es nuestro idioma más compatible para expresarnos. Lo encontramos más cómodo y suena bien. Si te preguntas como suena el Metalcore en alemán, ¡Definitivamente tienes que escuchar a Callejon! Estos tíos son increíbles.

La banda es muy joven y creo que tiene mucho futuro por delante, ¿Dónde os veis dentro de… no se… 5 años?

The band is very young and I think that it has great future ahead, Where you see yourself in… I don’t know… 5 years?

That’s a good question. For us, the album has been a huge step and I hope that we can do the next huge ones in the near future: A big european tour, at least one new album and the time of our lifes. You never can exactly know or plan what happens next – you can only try your best and work hard to achieve your dreams.

Es una buena pregunta. Para nosotros, el álbum ha sido un gran paso y espero que podamos hacer otros grandes pasos en el futuro: Un gran tour por Europa, por lo menos un nuevo disco y el tiempo de nuestras vidas. Nunca puedes saber exactamente lo que va a suceder a continuación, solo tratar de ser el mejor y trabajar duro para alcanzar tus sueños.

Como me gustaría conoceros un poco más, antes de terminar la entrevista, me gustaría haceros unas preguntas rápidas y me respondéis con lo primero que se os pase por la cabeza, sin miedo (Risas), ¿Preparados?
