“Estamos trabajando constantemente en la banda y escribiendo nuevas canciones todo el tiempo”

Entrevista realizada por Mike Young

Después de haber escuchado el nuevo disco de la banda de punk rock y rockabilly Austriaca “Kiss & Hell”, entrevistamos a su cantante, Kitty Casket, donde hablaremos a cerca del nuevo disco y canciones antiguas, el futuro de la banda, posible visita a España… Os dejo con la entrevista. Mike: Muy buenas, soy Mike Young y hoy tenemos el placer de entrevistar a la… ¿Adorable? Kitty Casket (Risas) ¿Cómo estás?

Mike: Hi, my name is Mike Young and today we have the pleasure to interview the… lovely? Kitty Casket (laughs) How are you?

Kitty: Actually I am pretty good. How are you? 😀

Kitty: Actualmente estoy muy bien. ¿Cómo estás? 😀

Mike: Very good, thanks.

Mike: Muy bien, gracias.

Mike: Antes de empezar, tengo que preguntarte sobre tu nombre, Kitty Casket, ¿De dónde viene ese nombre? Porque me parece muy curioso como nombre artístico.

Mike: Before starting, I’m going to ask you about your name, Kitty Casket, where does that name come from? Because, I find it’s very curious as a stage name.

Kitty: Oh well, I am not so sure myself. My friends used to call me Kitty and I don’t know, the Casket came up because of my morbidity I guess! 🙂

Kitty: Bueno, no estoy muy segura. Mis amigos solían llamarme Kitty y no sé, el Casket viene por mi morbosidad supongo 🙂

Mike: Me gustaría que me explicaras un poco como son tus sensaciones, ahora que acabáis de publicar vuestro cuarto disco y vais a empezar una nueva gira. ¿Cómo te sientes?

Mike: I’d like you to tell me about your feelings now that you have just released your fourth album and you are going to start a new tour. How do you feel?

Kitty: It is unbelievable that this is the fourth album already. It seems like yesterday that we released the first CD,… I am pretty excited how people will like “Kiss & Hell”. For me it is the best album we have done so far. Also I am very much looking forward to playing all the upcoming shows. We have some pretty amazing dates.

Kitty: Es increíble que este sea ya nuestro cuarto álbum. Parece que fue ayer cuando sacamos nuestro primer CD… Me emociona bastante que a la gente le guste “Kiss & Hell”. Para mí es el mejor álbum que hemos hecho hasta ahora. También tengo muchas ganas de tocar en todos los próximos conciertos. Tenemos algunas fechas bastante sorprendentes.

Mike: Una cosa que me sorprende, es que este nuevo disco, además de estar en formato digital y en Cd, también lo tenéis en vinilo, ¿Que os ha hecho apostar por este tipo de formato?

Mike: One thing that surprises me, is that this new album, besides being in digital format and on CD, you also have on vinyl, What made you go for this type of format?

Kitty: We love vinyl and already released two of our albums as vinyl editions. So for this one we definitely wanted to go for that again. Also the bloodred fits to our style perfectly. What is also cool is that the CD is included in the Vinyl package!

Kitty: Nos encanta el vinilo y ya hemos lanzado dos de nuestros álbumes como ediciones en vinilo. Por lo que para este definitivamente lo queríamos hacer otra vez. También se adapta a nuestro estilo perfectamente. Lo que también es genial es que el CD viene incluido con la edición en vinilo.

Mike: Si te soy sincero, me ha gustado mucho el disco, pero me han llamado especialmente la atención dos temas, de los que me gustaría que me explicaras algo más. El primero es sobre el tema «St. Tropez», no sé por qué, pero cada vez que la escucho, me recuerda a películas como «Eurotrip» o «American Pie». ¿En qué te inspiraste?

Mike: To be honest, I really liked the album, but two songs have especially caught my attention, of which I would like you to tell me something else. The first theme is «St. Tropez», I do not know why, but every time I listen to it reminds me of movies like «Eurotrip» or «American Pie». What has inspired you?

Kitty: I actually wrote the lyrics to that song while being on a plane in summer. I had all those crazy summer feelings and was thinking about beach, sand and love. I guess that was why it has that Popcorn-movie kind of feel.

Kitty: Realmente escribí la letra de esta canción estando en un avión en verano. Tenía todos esos sentimientos locos del verano y estaba pensando en la playa, la arena y el amor. Supongo que por eso tiene esa sensación a película con palomitas de maíz.

Mike: Y la segunda por la que te quería preguntar, es «Stick & Stones». La forma en la que sales cortando cuellos en el videoclip, me parece muy «sexy» (Risas) ¿Cómo se te ocurrió la idea de hacer un videoclip así?

Mike: And the second one I wanted to ask about, is «Stick & Stones». The way you are cutting necks in the video, seems very «sexy» to me (laughs). How did you come up with the idea of making a video clip like this?

Kitty: The video producer presented us with the idea of cutting a neck in the video. As the lyrics to the song are pretty much about that it was just a perfect fit and we loved the idea. Shooting the video was a lot of fun and a great experience. It was the first time that we worked with a big amount of fake blood like that.

Kitty: El productor del video nos presentó la idea de cortar un cuello en el vídeo. Como la letra de la canción es más o menos sobre eso, era un ajuste perfecto y nos encantó la idea. Nos divertimos mucho grabando el vídeo y fue una gran experiencia. Era la primera vez que trabajábamos con una gran cantidad de sangre falsa como esa.

Mike: ¿Cómo crees que ha evolucionado el sonido de la banda y la propia banda, desde el primer disco hasta este último?

Mike: How do you think has changed the sound of the band and the band itself, from the first album to the latest?

Kitty: I am sure listeners can answer that one better. Generally I think we matured as persons and also went through a lot of stuff together. We all grew as musicians and songwriters.

Kitty: Estoy segura de que los oyentes pueden responder a esa pregunta mejor que yo. Generalmente pienso que hemos madurado como personas y hemos pasado por un montón de cosas juntos. Crecemos como músicos y compositores.

Mike: También tengo que decirte, que el tema «Gone» me encanta. Creo que es una de las mejores canciones en acústico que he escuchado en mucho tiempo. ¿Porqué un tema acústico en disco tan cañero? Y sé que esta canción es muy importante y personal para ti.

Mike: In addition, I must confess that I love  your song “Gone”. I think it’s one of the best acoustic songs I’ve heard in a long time. Why an acoustic theme in this heavy album? And I know that this song is very important and personal to you.

Kitty: Thanks! 🙂 Well, we had an acoustic song on the last album as well and we thought it was a great song to end an album. Also this time we thought about doing one, but we weren’t sure if we will have the inspiration for one. In the end it all just fell into place, there were some personal issues I was dealing with and the acoustic song gave me the perfect opportunity to work them out.

Kitty: Gracias! 🙂 Bueno, teníamos una canción acústica así en el anterior álbum y pensamos que era una gran canción para acabar el álbum. También hemos pensado en hacer uno (en acústico), pero no estamos seguros de si tendremos inspiración para hacerlo. Al final todo cayó en su lugar, hubo algunos problemas personales que estaba tratando con la canción acústica y me dio la oportunidad perfecta para revelarlos. 

Mike: Y ya fuera un poco del nuevo disco, me gustaría preguntarte sobre el tema «Don’t Get Me Wrong» del disco ‘Back to Thrill’. ¿Quién os mal interpreta? Porque como tú dices, solo es una canción.

Mike: And out of the new album, I wanted to ask about the song «Don’t Get Me Wrong» from the album «Back to Thrill ‘. Who misunderstood you? Because, as you say, it’s just a song.

Kitty: The whole don’t get me wrong thing is actually pretty ironic as I was trying to offend people with it, maybe wake them up from their everyday life order. We sometimes just live into the day and do our stuff without even thinking about it or questioning it. Living our lives without really living them,…. That is pretty much what I wanted to point out with this track.

Kitty: El conjunto “Don’t get me wrong” es bastante irónico ya que estaba tratando de ofender a la gente con él, tal vez les desperté del orden de su vida cotidiana. A veces solo vivimos en el día y hacer las cosas sin pensar en ello o cuestionarlas. Viviendo nuestras vidas sin vivir realmente… Es más o menos lo que quería señalar con este tema.

Mike: Me gustaría hablar un poco sobre los inicios de la banda, porque supongo que como todo inicio, no debió de ser fácil y más en un estilo como el punk rock. ¿Cómo fueron? Porque además, sacasteis vuestro primer disco al año siguiente de formarse la banda.

Mike: I would like to talk a bit about the beginnings of the band, because I guess like every beginning, there must have been easier and in a style like punk rock. How did they go? Because in addition, did you released your first album the next year formed the band.

Kitty: The band formed in 2008, that is when we started recording our first album “Horrorexpress”. It was released in 2009 and that is when we started playing shows as well. I know it is quite unusual for a band to release an album before playing shows, but that is just how it worked for us.

Kitty: La banda se forma en el 2008, que fue cuando empezamos a grabar nuestro primer álbum “Horrorexpress”. Fue lanzado en el 2009 y es cuando empezamos a hacer conciertos. Sé que es absolutamente inusual para una banda sacar un álbum antes de hacer algunos conciertos, pero eso es solo como nos funcionó.

Mike:  ¿Y tus inicios? Porque supongo que esta no será tu primera banda.

Mike: And your beginnings? I guess because this will not be your first band.

Kitty: Kitty in a Casket is my first and only band!

Kitty: Kitty in a Casket es mi primera y única banda!

Mike: Me gustaría saber cómo fue tu primer contacto con la música, si estudiaste en algún conservatorio…

Mike: I would like to know how was your first contact with music, if you study in a conservatory…

Kitty: I started out in the school choir and also went to a music school, but I really started working on my voice with Kitty in a Casket. I also studied at the conservatory for a bit, but due to all the shows I have to continue my studies at some other point in my life.

Kitty: Comencé en el coro del colegio y también fui a una escuela de música, pero realmente empecé a trabajar mi voz con Kitty in a Casket. También estudié un poco en el conservatorio, pero debido a todos los shows, tengo que continuar mis estudios en algún momento de mi vida.

Mike: Me encantan las letras de tus canciones, ¿Las compones tu sola? Y si es así, ¿Donde encuentras la inspiración? Porque sé que realmente es difícil conseguir encajar la letra con la melodía de la canción.

Mike: I love the lyrics of your songs, Do you compose your own? And if so, Where do you find the inspiration? Because, I know it’s really hard to get fit the lyrics with the melody of the song.

Kitty: I write all the lyrics to our song. It is challenging but I have a lot of stories to tell. They mostly come from everyday life. Sometimes I build a horror story around them but there are also songs where it’s just the experience itself without any additions.

Kitty: Yo escribo las letras de las canciones. Es un reto pero tengo un montón de historias que contar. Vienen sobre todo de la vida cotidiana. A veces construyo una historia de terror a su alrededor, pero también hay canciones donde es solo mis experiencias sin nada adicional.

Mike:  En marzo vais a empezar vuestra nueva gira, que os llevará por salas tanto de Europa, como de Estados Unidos. ¿Volveréis a pasar por España? Porque si no recuerdo mal, la última vez, estuvisteis tocando en el festival ‘Psychobilly meeting’ aquí en Barcelona, ¿Que recuerdos tienes de aquella visita? ¿Pudisteis visitar Barcelona o fue un viaje rápido?

Mike: In March you are going to start your new tour, which will take you through the concert halls of both Europe and the United States. Will you come to go through Spain? Because if I remember correctly, the last time, you stand by playing in the ‘Psychobilly meeting’ festival here in Barcelona, What are your memories of that visit? Could you visit Barcelona or was a quick trip?

Kitty: I really hope we will be able to play in Spain again. Right now we don’t have any plans, but I hope that some shows will come up. Spain is lovely and beautiful. That is also how I recall our visit, when we played at the Psychobilly Meeting. Beautiful buildings and the beach very close and stunning! I love the ocean, so I guess Barcelona would be a great city to live in for me.

Kitty: Realmente espero que podamos volver a tocar en España. Ahora no tenemos planes, pero espero que algunos conciertos se vayan a planear. España es encantadora y hermosa. También es como recuerdo nuestra visita, cuando tocamos en el “Psychobilly Meeting”. Edificios hermosos y la playa muy cerca y sorprendente! Amo el océano, así que supongo que para mí  Barcelona sería una gran ciudad para vivir.

Mike: Me gustaría saber cuál es tu opinión acerca de la actualidad musical, ¿Crees que el rock sigue teniendo futuro?

Mike: I would like to know your opinion about the current music scene, Do you think that rock still have a future?

Kitty: Sure, there are always trends and rock and roll music will survive it all! 🙂

Kitty: Claro, siempre hay tendencias y la música rock sobrevivirá a todo! 🙂

Mike: ¿Hasta dónde crees que puede llegar la banda? Yo sinceramente creo que aún os queda mucho camino por recorrer y que tenéis mucho futuro.

Mike: How far do you think you can get the band? I sincerely believe that you are still a long way to go and have a great future.

Kitty: I hope so. We are working constantly on the band and writing new tunes all the time. We hope to get to play a lot more shows and release a lot more albums.

Kitty: Eso espero. Estamos trabajando constantemente en la banda y escribiendo nuevas canciones todo el tiempo. Esperamos llegar a hacer muchos más conciertos y sacar más álbumes.

Mike: ¿Dónde te ves dentro de 10 años?

Mike: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Kitty: I hope by then we will have released some more CDs and toured a lot more. Also I hope music is the one and only thing we have to do by then.

Kitty: Espero que por entonces hayan salido algunos CDs más y haber girado mucho más. También espero que la música sea lo único que tengamos que hacer por entonces.

Mike: Para ir acabando, quiero hacerte unas preguntas cortas para que contestes rápido, lo primero que te venga a la cabeza, no te preocupes por lo que puedas contestar (Risas). Así te podemos conocer un poco más. ¿Estás lista?
